Clap and Crap: Reaction to Barnsley`s victory over Cambridge

Welcome to our new feature on Reds Report titled Clap and Crap. The three members of Reds Report, Carlo, Steve and Ian all give their take on the latest Barnsley performance documenting what they felt was good and worth a clap, what was poor and definitely crap.

So the Reds banished the poor showing at home to Blackpool on Saturday with another decent away victory beating Cambridge United 4-0. The U`s had won three, drawn one and lost only one of their previous five home games this season only conceding three goals in the process at the Abbey Stadium.

Whilst the score line looks impressive, shout outs have to go to Liam Roberts (again) in goal and a fine performance from defender Mael De Gevigney who both kept United at bay at times.

Here is what Carlo, Steve and Ian thought.

Carlo –

Crap – Jon Russell.

In his deeper midfield role he’s still too slow and even when going forward too negative. Others around him will pass and move but often Russell is too static.

Clap –  Callum Styles.

His turn of pace and at times majestic passing gives Barnsley an edge and fits within the pressing style that serves Barnsley well. We will enjoy him whilst we can because undoubtedly he’ll be making a claim for player of the year but then sold in January. Special mention to Liam Roberts who was simply superb again.

Steve –

Crap – toss up between Williams and O’Keeffe

Two poor defenders who can’t pass a parcel never mind a ball. O’Keeffe is a red card waiting to happen, Sunday morning tackling and diving in. Williams is not a captain for me.

Clap –  Liam Roberts

Roberts continues to impress game by game, keeping Cambridge out on numerous occasions with fine reflex saves. Needs to work on his distribution though.

Special mention for Mael who never put a foot wrong and Russell’s first half performance showed he can move with purpose and a degree of speed and showed he can be the pivot for the midfield as long as the other midfielders stay forward, excellent passing and finish for goal.

Ian –

Crap – Max Watters.

Whilst he scored, the keeper will be embarrassed to have dived over the shot. Shouldn’t have started and there were plenty of supporters saying the same on social media when the side was announced. Looks so off his game & not on the same wavelength as his fellow players. Strange that Collins didn’t give him a full 90 minutes when we were 3-0 up to see if he could score another goal for confidence.

Clap – the high press returned

Certainly in the first half. We started the game strongly and it was so good to see a positive reaction after Saturday. Shout out for Liam Roberts who once again was in great form. Mael De Gevigney had his best game in a red shirt and Nicky Cadden who was a threat in the first half.

In Summary

Football is all about opinions. Give us your clap and crap choices from the victory over Cambridge, either comment on the post below or on social media.

  1. Crass title. Disrespectful to the players, schoolboy analysis of 90 minutes of play. An embarrassment to Barnsley fans. Please get rid of this joke of a ‘feature’. It can only undermine player confidence.

  2. Then don’t read it !!! These are our personal opinions which we always give and state as such. If you think this undermines player confidence then you should go on twitter and don’t be so naive to think that players take a blind bit of notice.
